Shameful Rutgers Event

I usually try to reserve upbeat local events for my blog. Unfortunately, an upsetting, appalling event occurred last night at Rutgers University.

To quote Aaron Marcus, Rutgers student leader: “”We wanted to protest this event because as the children and grandchildren of victims of the Holocaust we believed it to be absolutely absurd to compare Israeli act of self defense to the viscous, systematic murder of millions of Jews, Catholics, Gays, Gypsies, Russians and others.

STANDWITHUS DEPLORES ANTI-JEWISH DISCRIMINATION AT RUTGERS “NEVER AGAIN FOR ANYONE” EVENT, APPLAUDS PRO-ISRAEL ACTIVISTS’ STRONG RESPONSE

Rutgers student organization BAKA (Students United for Middle Eastern Justice) sponsored the presumably public event, but when it became apparent that pro-Israel attendees would outnumber BAKA sympathizers by almost four to one, the organizers became alarmed. “There are so many Jews here,” exclaimed one BAKA member who was wearing a “Smash Israeli Apartheid” T-shirt.

To end this post with an upbeat, local event, here’s one of my son the filmmaker’s videos that may appear in the Highland Park Public Library Teen Film Festival on February 6:

That entire episode was extremely horrible and appalling.

Appalling is the word. How could they ban Jewish students? Did they ask them their names, their religion...?

I believe they didn't allow anyone wearing a kippah. Then they allowed people who were already members of their organization. They suggested to others they could pay (even though it was advertised as free and open to the public), register and show ids. Some of the videos show what happened, though I am not clear on all the details myself.

There is one video of a Libyan Jew - that is worth watching. He talked of how he had been treated in Libya, and he felt the same way on Saturday night.

I haven't had the time to look at the videos yet. I only read your post and I had seen your comment on FB yesterday.

Unfortunately, we've had many similar events in the UK, and without such a big Jewish counter-protest. There have also been cases of Jews being thrown out of such meetings without having done anything wrong, although anti-Israel protestors have no qualms about disrupting pro-Israel events, which they do frequently. Disgusting.

Daniel, I read on one blog that a woman who appeared at the meeting on Saturday night was also at a similar meeting in the UK. No, our community won't stand for this. Thankfully, Central New Jersey is full of Israel supporters!

There is already a follow up meeting about this... if anyone is local, you can contact me (http://www.leoraw.com/contact/) for more info about the Jewish community meeting.

I would be interested to hear the results of that meeting. I am not local.

Like so many in Norwegian public media they are led wild over decades.
Many, whose reason I do not actually know, are very eager to discredit Israel.
I am so sad about it. Good that the New Jersey population fights back.
In Haugesund a play about the destiny of Maurtis Rabinowtiz is being set up this summer.
Last year a street got named after him.
We are not all ignorants and worse.

Thank you, Felisol, for your kind words. It is a pleasure to hear your perspective. I'm glad you stay in touch.

Hope your hands are doing well. I just read yesterday that curcumin, an ingredient in turmeric, has proven helpful for some arthritis sufferers.

It appalls «Louis» that there is so much anti-Israeli sentiment on the campuses around the country. UC-Irvine is particularly odious in this regard. As bad as it is in itself, the more shameful part of it is how the left-wing faculties and administrators seem to fan the anti-Israeli sentiment. «Louis» applauds you for posting this.

Thank you for reading. The anti-Israel sentiment on campus is scary. One sends ones children out to get a good education, not to get dangerous indoctrination.

On a happier note, I love the movie and anything with a duck in it can only be great...
