Photographing Pigeons – No, Mourning Dove

I took these pictures of this pigeon (at least I think it’s a pigeon – now I think it’s a mourning dove; it doesn’t look like the greyish blue pigeons in New York City) in the Old City of Jerusalem. A little boy with blond payis (curly sidelocks that some religious Jewish boys wear) asked me in a thickly-accented English why I was taking pictures of a bird. It seemed to be amusing to him. I told him I had also photographed ibex and hyrax, too. “Oh,” he said, “you like taking pictures of animals”. Yes, I agreed.

Nice shot and nice you got him interested in what you are doing. It may kindle a similar interest in him too. :)

Is there a difference between a dove and a pigeon?

Anyway, this is one great capture. I miss seeing this kind of bird here.

My critter is posted HERE. Please stop by if you have some time. Happy weekends!

Someone told me that a dove is just a white pigeon. I'll ask one of my birder friends, if no one online can give a definitive answer.

The pigeon is everywhere, isn't it? I have one at Rosh HaNikra, which I'll put up one of these days.

The yonah knows the Old City is a good place for a "hand-out." hehe I think the stones are as beautiful as the birds.

I love the way you have captured the hues of the bird as well as those of the paving.

I have seen brown Pigeons on occasion though not as often as the usual gray. This is an interesting critter.

Thanks all, especially the comments about the stones. (Any comment on the bits of litter? No comment there? I've got an upcoming post about litter. Some time soon.)

What a beautiful bird. I have never seen a brown pigeon and that makes it even more beautiful to me.

I loved the story of the boy talking to you. That made me smile. Thanks for sharing with us!

Rosie, why don't you do a camera-critters post? It's a lot of fun. You don't have to be an expert photographer, just have a nice animal photo. If it's an ordinary photo, add a good story.
