What’s My Google Ranking?
Two questions here:
1) What is a Google Ranking? (and should I even care)
2) What is MY Google Ranking? How do I find this out?
Let’s start with question 2. If you type “Google toolbar” in Google, you can get a link to the Google Toolbar. Download the toolbar and install it in your browser. I have mine turned off most of the time (because it takes up a little space at the top of the page), so now I’ll go turn it on so I can see the Google Ranking for every page I browse.
The Google Ranking for my own blog is 3 (out of 10). For my main website page, https://www.leoraw.com/, my Google Ranking is 4. Why is it higher for my main website page? I design websites, and I often link from the home page of the site I designed back to my main website page. So if the site I designed has a higher ranking than mine, it helps boost my ranking. I’ve been designing websites longer (10 years?) than I’ve been blogging (6 months?).
You can read more about Google ranking technology here. But the basic answer to question 1, what is this ranking stuff, if you want your page to show up higher on a Google search than a similar page, you need a higher ranking. The best way to get a higher ranking is to have related web pages with a higher ranking than yours link to your page. Note that I said related. If you are writing about dog food, and someone who is writing about poetry in China links to you, that is not as valuable as a dog food company linking to you.
Now comes the fun part. Let’s take some blogs and find out their Google ranking:
- A Mother in Israel: 4
- Little Frumhouse on the Prairie: 4
- Everyone Needs Therapy: 5
- Me-ander: 4
- Rubicon3: 4
- Random Thoughts–Do they have meaning?: 4
- Ilana-Davita: 4
- A Perpetual Outsider Writes: 2
- Elinka’s Journal: 3
- I’ll Call Baila: 3
- Lion of Zion: 3
Maybe at some point I’ll discuss Technorati ratings.
Baila says
A 3???? I'm devastated!!!!!
It's a good think I'm a 10 in real life....:D
leoraw says
No, Baila, don't be! How long have you been blogging? Keep blogging! When you hit a topic that someone else thinks is rocking great, they'll link to you.
In real life, I'm sure you're a 10.5.
Ilana-Davita says
I'm not sure you can put a Google toolbar on Safari. Is it easy to remove if you don't like it?
I didn't know about Google Ranking but my own Blog Stats never cease to amaze me. It's funny how what people have typed to end up on your blog. It's also fascinating to see what posts attract people. One post on chasidism and another one on kosher flights have each attracted about 200 viewers whereas some I have sweated upon (such as the one on the morning blessings) have had relatively few readers.
Daniel Saunders says
How disappointing to be the lowest one! :-)
leoraw says
Ilana-Davita, there seem to be alternatives to Google toolbar:
http://googlerankings.com/prindex.php
for example.
And Google Toolbar has an Uninstall link in the Help menu. Seems easy enough to remove.
Daniel, maybe you should try posting some recipes. Then you can be on the Kosher Cooking Carnival, and people are always looking on the web for recipes! ;-) Seriously, keep plugging away at your own blog, and look for other blogs with related content, and comment. Also, try making a list once a week of blog posts that interest you. The idea is you help them, they'll help you.

ooh fun. i'm a 4. this makes a little more sense to me than the technorati ratings, i look forward to your post on that one!
leoraw says
Glad your enjoying this, Phyllis. I'm looking forward to your Haveil Havalim post this coming Sunday.
Jack says
I like being a four. It was one of my favorite ages.
leoraw says
Jack, me, too. I'm close to four in that picture of me in the header of my blog and in my Blogger ID. (I may have been 3).
45 is OK, too. But 15 was lousy.
Jack says
I can't speak about 45, but 15 was kind of fun.
e-kvetcher says
Leora, you've got it all wrong. Google uses an algorithm called PigeonRank which is described in detail here
leoraw says
e-kvetcher, your Google Ranking is a 3. Thanks for joining in on the fun.
Please leave a comment! I love to hear from you.
