Ruby Tuesday with X-Country Skis
Last week for the first time in almost ten years I had the opportunity to go cross-country skiing while my daughter and her friends were sledding. The red hydrant behind the skis is what qualifies this photo for Ruby Tuesday, a photo meme where you post any photo with some red. And this was before our bigger storm that dumped over a foot of snow. Strangely, the Boston area, which I visited this past weekend and is over five hours drive north of our area of New Jersey, had very little snow.
I learned a good gardening tip on Saturday night while driving from Newton, MA to Marlboro, MA (we were invited to a laser tag party). If one of your small trees gets a lot of snow on it, brush it off with a long broom as soon as you can. Otherwise, the snow may permanently bend the tree into an unhealthy shape. If that does happen, you may have to trim the tree and wait years until it gets back a normal shape.

Very nice contrasts with the snow...the hints of red radiate.

Did you enjoy cross-country skiing? I like it but find it tiring.
One year we lost a tree due to the snow. There was so much snow on a rather young tree that it bent the it irremediably.

So that was why this guy (cannot remember his name!) on this gardening show on talk radio recommended one go out with a broom and take off the snow from the small trees. Better yet, if you tie up and cover the little trees in the fall. For those who really love their trees and don't mind these sort of tasks.
I used to like a lot when I was younger (in my twenties) and had more energy. One of the best places I've gone cross-country skiing is in New Hampshire at Bretton Woods (where there was a famous conference after World War II).

Delightful glimpse of ruby red in your wintry photo. Hope you had fun ... I just watched the Nordic Combined Olympic event on TV. That's about as close as I get to snow ;-)
Hugs and blessings,

The exercise seems to work well for those who live in northern Europe - they have enough snow all season long skiing. Yet, NJ has seen so much snow, the Mid-Atlantic region the snow champ nationwide this year. With the wheelchair, less snow is usually more preferable...
leoraw says
I think Maryland got more snow than New Jersey... and northern New Jersey doesn't have as much as southern! MA had almost none.
Hope it stays dry in your area of CT, just so you can get around in your wheelchair. I supposed putting little skis on the bottom of your wheelchair would be fun but extremely dangerous.

Newton to Marlboro? You were in my extended family's neck of the woods. You can't spit without bumping into one of them up that way :).
I've never tried X-Country skiing. My parents took it up a year ago but mainly they're sticking to downhill. (Or were, until my mother wrecked her shoulder out in Aspen last week.)

Anyone in Weston, MA? Even in the dark, that is one of the prettiest towns. I always wonder how anyone can afford to live there.
Driving through Wayland brought back childhood memories; a good friend grew up there.
Cross country is more like hiking. You need strength, and you get to enjoy nature. Downhill is great for the thrill. And the warm cup of cocoa or coffee after several runs.

Fire hydrants are like little pieces of art. You can find them in the most interesting places and in fascinating configurations. This one looks just about buried.
Ralph says
Haha! I cannot picture little skis on Ralph's wheelchair. ;-)
Let's hope the snowfall tonight won't drop too much.
I like the bit of red qualifying the photo for Ruby Tuesday. Great tip about caring for your trees in winter.

woops...that was moi. The computer was still on Ralph's profile.
leoraw says
So that explains why Ralph is talking about himself in third person. Of course, Louis la Vache does that all the time. So Leora has noticed.
Auntie E says
Those would of come in handy here. I love cross country skiing.
Louis la Vache says
«Louis» is happy you had a good time on the skis...You don't even want to think about «Louis» on skis...it isn't a pretty sight...Oh, no!
;-)
leoraw says
«Leora» is enjoying reading about «Louis» on skis. In the 3rd cow. (???!)
Louis la Vache says
hee hee
«Louis» isn't the third person, he's the third vache...

Great shot of the skis! Thanks for the gardening tip too. Sounds a good idea. :)

My holly tree was partly blown over by Hurricane Ike. I never could get it straightened up all the way. Now it is growing towards the light, and straightening up and out.
A broom would not have helped.
Happy RT,

That is one sport I would love to learn.
Celebrated it with Dad
Batya from Shiloh says
Lovely picture. I surprised myself with this Ruby Tuesday!
They said on the news that only 2 out of the 50 states didn't have snow, Florida and Hawaii.
Rachel says
It looks like it was a beautiful sunny day - everything looks so sparkly and clear!

A cool shot for RT! Looks like you did enjoy skiing with your daughter and her friends. It's good the hydrant is red so it's still visible even if it's covered with snow.

This is so well fitted being that the Olympics are taking place right now.
Beautiful detail.

The closest I will ever get to skiing is the TV screen with the Winter Olympics! So I find your photo quite intriguing!

That is the name on my skis....I do brush the snow off of our pine trees when it is very wet and heavy. Nice to know that it is a good thing to do.. Michelle
