Matza, Nuts and Chocolate

chocolate covered matza with nuts
Have any leftover matza? See any matza for sale and wonder what one might do with it? Here’s an easy dessert I made with my daughter during Passover.

Ingredients:

  • 1 bag chocolate chips
  • 1 sheet of matza, broken into pieces
  • 1/2 cup of your favorite nuts (walnuts, almonds or pecans) broken into pieces
  • Paper plates, a large spoon and wax paper

If you want, you can soak the nuts for a few hours to make them more chewable. Melt the chocolate chips in a saucepan. Add broken matza and nuts and mix with the chocolate. Put a sheet of wax paper on a paper plate (the flat white kind that one puts in the microwave work best). Put a spoonful of the chocolate mixture unto the wax paper. Repeat until you have filled the wax paper (you can probably fit about 5 or 6 of these on a paper plate). Repeat on another paper plate (our mixture made two platefuls). Place flat in the freezer. Serve straight from the freezer.

Do you have any fun, creative matza dishes?

I am sure kids love that! I used to have a recipe for a wonderful apple cake but I didn't bookmark it and so now have no idea where it is nor what it was called. Did you make this one up?
Sometimes I spread the matzah with tomato sauce, add pizza cheese and grill that for a few minutes.
Do not forget to send this recipe to kcc (I am hosting the next one).

Sounds like matzah pizza, which is my kids' favorite Chol Hamo'ed lunch! Except that they don't grill it. They prepare it in the microwave.

My boys live on matza pizza as well, also using the microwave. My daughter spent most of Pesach complaining there was nothing to eat.

This had nothing to do with a clever recipe, but I used to carry it with me when I was having IV treatments for MS..it helped with my nausea which was terrible...so I used it like a soda cracker..but chocolate and nuts sounds really good..

I can see why matza would be easy for treating nausea. I'm so sorry you had to go through those treatments.

That is a very interesting tip about soaking the nuts to make them more chewable. I never heard that before. I assume that you have to dry the soaked nuts well before adding them to the chocolate so that the chocolate won't seize.

I don't think this qualifies as creative, because it is pretty common, but I make matzoh lasagna with leftover matzoh.

Laura, it's because I hang out at times with those that follow health diets such macrobiotics or raw food diets that I learned about soaking nuts. Here's one post on soaking nuts: http://www.raw-food-living.com/soaking-nuts.html

I don't typically dry the nuts, just drain off the water.

This was the first year we made matza lasagna. Since I don't eat dairy, I didn't really eat it. But my middle son liked it a lot (he was the one who made it).

Your son made matzoh lasagna? Nice. So when is he going to do a guest food post?

He does movies. If a matzah lasagna every shows up, it's because a Purple Monster wants one to eat. Or Pierre needs one to save the day. Or Dr. Whatever his name is decides to poison the matzah lasagna as part of his evil plan...
